On observations of interconnected disarray

concert bass drum and interactive electronics

In my work, W 31st and 8th (fixed media, 2011) the present musical qualities of a city street corner are explored. On observations of interconnected disarray utilizes material from the previous work through three separate entities. Sounds acquired directly from the previous piece are heard. The percussionist plays music abstracted from analysis of this material; the order of the presented musical fragments remains up to the performer. Interactive electronics further alter this material in a variety of ways; change in the employed processes however, is not a decision made by the performer. These three items are separate musical voices derived from the one source, but their presentation remains largely asynchronous from one another. The piece was commissioned by percussionist Mark Cook.
